How to Find Us

We're located in the county seat of Sussex County, New Jersey, at 30 Moran Street in Newton. The co-op is one block east of Route 206 between Trinity and E. Clinton streets, just up the hill from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Inspection Station. If you know where this is, you're all set. If not, just click here and you'll be connected to Google Maps. They'll provide you with directions from your door to ours.

Our Mission

We at the Sussex County Food Co-op believe in the positive association between good food and good health. We are dedicated to providing our members and customers with high quality products -- with emphasis on organic, Biodynamic and locally-produced food suitable for a wide range of dietary needs. We welcome special orders for goods not usually found in conventional food stores. We strive for first-rate customer service, and truth in advertising. Another goal is to educate our members and the public. The Sussex County Food Co-op pledges to provide our patrons with good-for-you food at good-to-you prices!

How We Operate

A food co-op (short for cooperative) is a business that draws upon the financial support and "sweat equity" of its member-owners to purchase in bulk and pass along the savings to customers in the form of lower prices. Members "cooperate" by volunteering their time and energy to do the work necessary for the store to function -- everything from stocking shelves to recycling cardboard.

By doing the tasks that paid employees perform in retail establishments, co-op members benefit themselves by keeping store overhead -- and retail prices -- low.

There are about 500 retail food co-ops nationwide. SCFC is one of the handful of food co-ops in New Jersey.

You don't have to be a member to shop at the Sussex County Food Co-op. Membership includes a voice in co-op policy -- and a larger discount on purchases than members of the public receive.

The following links supply information on cooperative business.

Placing Special Orders

We gladly accept special orders from members of the public as well as co-op members. Please stop by the co-op in person to place your order or to speak with a Manager for information on product availability, delivery times, and the co-op's ordering schedule.

The co-op places its orders with United Natural Foods on Mondays. We usually receive the weekly deliveries bright and early on Thursday mornings. A word to the wise: Drop off you special request by Friday or Saturday so the managers have time to include it in the weekly order.

If time is of the essence, please let us know when you place your order. Better yet, give us plenty of lead time.

Be advised that our distributors are sometimes out of stock on a given item, and that it may be necessary for us to re-order. Sometimes the manufacturer simply cannot keep up with demand, and it may be weeks (or even months) before the item is available again. Think of how drought or frost can destroy or decimate crops such as coffee and citrus. Sometimes products are discontinued, renamed or reformulated.

We do not accept special orders over the phone.

Fill out one slip for each item you want -- legibly please!
